EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
